Update

A long overdue update.

Sadly my teenage daughter was taken seriously ill at the start of March and spent a little over a week hospitalised before returning home and needing a lot of care. It’s been a very distressing time for my family and naturally taking photos took a back seat.

However, things are progressing with her health (albeit slowly) and I’m catching up with the pre-hospital backlog as well as shooting lots more rolls of film. A new film camera even arrived this week and it feels wonderful to be able to get back to doing what I love.

The ‘roll every day in 2024’ will no longer be technically correct but I’m catching up for the missed few weeks so by the end of 244 I’ll still have shot 366 rolls. Honestly I didn’t realise how important this is to me until I was unable to do it. It’s lovely to be back x

A very gloomy day following lots of rain and a walk round the Matley Wood area. Black and white film just felt perfect for the mood.

In previous years I’ve really enjoyed Winter, the starkness it brings, the mood, But this year it already feels like Winter has lasted at least 3 months too long and that Spring is in no hurry to make an appearance.

Bah humbug.

It’s so cheap and good, I cannot resist it. As soon as the cool kids realise it’s better than Portra that’ll be it, the price will rocket. So for now I’m going to max it out.

Lots of Camellias today from Exbury Gardens which has opened back up for the year, providing me with loads of colour to capture.

Not too dissimilar to day 35 I know, this time with the old Luibitel 2 and a roll of Kodak Gold 200 in the garden.

Now you are probably wondering what’s the deal with the slightly cross processed vibes. I processed this with a roll of Hannologitals experimental film (which didn’t exposure at all yet again so I am deffo giving up on that film) and a roll of very old film that was already pre-exposed but needed a chemical process no longer available. I’m pretty sure the later did the orangey effect as this is something I’ve seen when cross processing on purpose before.

I kinda like it!

This was a gnarly old roll of film and I’m still deciding if I like the images…

Life has taken a bit of a turn recently and my youngest daughter has become pretty unwell so getting out and about has gotten a little tricky so for now I’m shooting much closer to home.

Fired this roll off in the garden becasue I freaking love the camellia tree, the birght red flowers give me real hope of Summer and and end to all the rain we’ve been seeing here in the UK.

Sorry if you have rocked up to this post looking for images shot with the camera AGFA Optima 200, how peculiar to release a camera and a film with the same name. Here’s an article I found that will help you with that!

Day 35 Rollei RPX 400

I’ve learnt so far this year, during shooting a roll of film a day, that it’s ok to just randomly shoot a roll of film with no expectations. It’s involved me having to rethink how I take photos and it’s led to some unexpected nice surprises along the way.

Rollei RPX 400 is a relatively cheap black and white film at £8 a roll and is well known for its rich tones and shadow detail which makes it good for pretty much any lighting. Perfect for this time of the year when it’s grey and overcast one minute and bright sunny winter sun all within the pace of one hour.

Shot at my fave Pig Bush, a local spot that I love any time of the year.

Early into January I accepted that it’s ok to go out with a film camera and not have any preconceived ideas about what to photograph and that yes, there are going to be some pretty average photos.

We’ve got some plans for February, a few days out and a couple of nights away and I’m really excited for a change of scene and in turn subject matter. As much as I love home I’m beginning to feel like I’ve developed so many photos of Lepe beach already I’m only a month in 😅

There’s a footpath that I love in the Exbury area. One that’s shrouded by green boughs and hedgerows in Spring, with bluebells galore. A lesser known spot that only a handful of locals use.

I hadn’t been for a couple of months so decided to shoot today’s roll there. It’s all a bit barren and Wintery at present and I’ll be honest, the moment I started walking I thought I had made a huge mistake - how could I shoot a roll of film there, black and white especially.

Film photo shot on Ilford HP5 Plus

But after a few minutes I started to relax a little and just enjoy the walk for what it was. Birds twittered away over head, a kestrel soared, scouting for prey and finally a small murmuration of starlings made an appearance.

I discovered a path I hadn’t spotted before and walked a slightly different route, noting the deer tracks and furrows in and out of the adjacent woodland. I’ve seen deer in the crops previous Summers and it felt like I’d found the missing piece of a jigsaw to find their route in and out.

Film photo shot on Ilford HP5 Plus

And before you know it I was grinning from ear to ear, thinking I’m the luckiest person to be able to be there. Good times!

I dropped in at Pig Bush on the way home too to shoot a few more frames, feeling all energised by the Exbury footpath jaunt.

And some random shots fro mthe start of the roll at home that morning…

There’s only one thing better than shooting a new type of film - shooting expired film.

This roll of York Photo Labs DXG 200 35mm film expired 35 years ago and goodness knows how it’s been stored. I should mention at this point that many people store their film in fridges or freezers if they don’t plan on using it for a long time. This helps prevent too much film degradation.

Personally I LOVE the degradation, the unknown outcome, the quirks of time and that’s why you’ll often find me on eBay stalking the expired film.

Basic and old, it always reminds me that you don’t need an expensive camera to get nice medium format film images.

A much longer over due day of sunlight and blue skies here today. It’s amazing just how much brighter my mood is on a sunny day.

Al finished work a little earlier than usual today so we headed down the the sea wall at Lymington, setting off from Bath Road carpark to catch the last of the afternoons warm glow (well warm-ish).

It’s always exciting to try a new film, especially when there’s a lot of blue sky as it’s usually the blue tones where different film cameras really stand out.

I love the dreamy lemon and turquoise hues of the packaging, it made the whole afternoon feel that bit more sunny.

The twitchers were out in force and we moseyed up alongside them to watch the spoonbills, avocets, lapwings, egrets and dunlins enjoying their own afternoon delights. This was the nicest hour I’ve spent out pottering about this year and I cannot wait for the sea pinks and other wild coastal flowers to start to make an appearance.

This morning I headed down to the Quay, Lymington with the intention of taking lots of colourful images of the shops. I’d loaded the Canon EOS 3 up with Portra the night before, excited to shoot some nice bright colours.

And then I woke up and looked out of the window.

Fog. Thick fog. Hmm Plan B, an impromptu stroll along part of Lymington’s Sea Wall, accpanied by the Isle of Wight ferry fog-horning past in the murk and the creepy tinkle of bits of yachts and boats in the breeze.

No, you were scared.

Isle of wight ferry in the fog

Proper moody vibes and somewhat eerie, every now and again a silhouette would appear from the fog, a runner getting their morning exercise.

I wasn’t sure about my choice of 160 film at this point, but the Canon was on AV mode so it’s meant to read the film speed and calculate the shutter speed depending on my aperture.

I find it hard to put my trust in the camera, that it will be able to work out what’s what, I’ve been so used to working it out from the film speed and the available light previously. It feels strange not to have to think about that, strange but not unpleasant!

Day 27 Expired (1999) Ilford XP1 400

Now this film threw me big time! Ilford XP1 400.

There I was all ready to develop it it when I spotted at the very last minute that although it’s a black and white film stock, it’s also C-41 developing process.
Mind f*ck 🤪

At that point I popped it into a jiffy bag and posted it off to Harman Lab because my brain could literally not compute the utter madness. I’m so used to Ilford film being’ the home of black and white’ that C-41 seemed frankly, crazy bananas.

Black and white film photo shot on Ilford XP1 400 35 film that expired in 1999

Completely unsure what to expect, one eyebrow raised slightly when the negatives returned ‘pretty green’, then I scanned them in and everything was black and white as expected.

I was left a bit '“who am I?”, “where am I?” Confused.
Yes, it was the only film at the time to be able to be developed C-41 process - but why?

Baffled why you would want to develop black and white film using the C-41 process when it’s a faffier process than traditional b&w developing. I took to Google. And Wikipedia answered: As a chromogenic film, XP2 can scan well because it avoids the limitations of Digital ICE, plus it has a similar exposure latitude to color negative film, so it can be exposed with an exposure index from ISO 50/18° to 800/30° on a single roll and be developed in traditional C-41 processing.
Colour me educated!

Polaroid High definition 100 ISO. This film - where to start. Bought a couple of years ago in a job lot on eBay, it’s been sat on my shelf since. It’s expired (obviously) and from what I can gather form online searches it dates form the early 2000s.

With only 12 shots on the roll it’s a surreal experience for anyone used to shooting 24 or 36 exposure rolls. It makes you stop and think in a 120 medium format film kind of way - you have 12 shots and you don’t want to waste them.

Popped the Tamron fisheye lens on the Canon and headed down to Calshot beach on an overcast morning. I love fisheye lenses with buildings (totally obsessed after watching Poor things) so I thought I’d give it a go on the beachhuts.

I should point out that I had no idea this was a 100 ISO film, I hadn’t been able to find out much about it online beforehand so in hindsight I should have waited for a sunnier day.

I sent this roll off to Harman Lab to develop. Harman have a really fast turnaround time at this time of year, I sent the film off in the mail on Monday morning and it came back developed on the Thursday. At £7 per. roll for developing it’s one of the more affordable places I’ve been able to find online too. They are super helpful too, I often send them lon expired rolls of film, once a pre-exposed roll from 1975 and they managed to get that developed perfectly.

I had no idea what to expect from this roll so imagine my delight when the strangely framed negatives (thanks to the fish eye lens) came back from the lab and I started to scan them in! I’ll be adding this film to my eBay watchlist.

Breezy, drizzly - bracing!

I love Lepe Beach in all weather and at all times of day. Today we walked along the beach towards Calshot, the wind buffeting behind us. As we turned to walk back we felt the force of the wind and drizzle. Incredibly refreshing and perfect for what had been, up to that moment, a pretty stressful day.

Tried desperately to strike the balance between taking photos and cradling the camera away from the salty spray and cold rain. As this is a relatively new camera I’m very keen that it doesn’t follow the fate of a few other of my cameras and die before the year has gotten properly started.

As you may have noticed, I’ve been spending a fair bit of time at Lepe this month and have finally taken the plunge and bought an annual parking clock from reception at The Lookout cafe.

Thanks to Al for being a jolly good model, foiling my best efforts to capture him falling off the wooden beach defences as he precariously balanced and walked along. Next time gadget, next time.

When the weather is moody like this Ilford film always feels like a safe bet. I love that that it’s relatively cheap compared to some other films and also pretty idiot-proof. If you are planning on shooting film for the first time I would highly recommend starting with either Ilford Delta 400 or Ilford HP5+.
